Neil Warnock on top of the world at Leeds United

11:10am Tuesday 21st February 2012

MANAGER Neil Warnock has hailed new club Leeds United as one of the biggest in the world following his appointment on a contract until the end of next season.

Warnock, who spent an unsuccessful four-game loan spell at York City in the 1970s, had three years at the helm of Scarborough between 1986 and 1989, during which time he won one of his seven promotions as a manager.

That promotion experience is something Warnock will look to utilise during his time at Elland Road.

After his spell in charge at QPR was prematurely ended, Warnock suggested that his appointment is right for both parties.

He said: “I just felt it was the right club, both in terms of what I was looking for and what they were looking for. It could be a good mix.”

A number of clubs including Wolves and Huddersfield where thought to be in the running to hire Warnock but, after holding talks with Whites chairman Ken Bates in Monaco on Friday, the 63-year-old was unveiled within 24 hours.

Warnock said Bates was “supportive”. “He knows I feel we need two or three more players if we can get the right ones to supplement what we have already got,” he said. “Ideally I would like to get someone in before the weekend.”

Saturday’s game against Doncaster Rovers saw a spectacular United fight back as they won 3-2 with an injury time goal after trailing 2-0. Warnock admitted watching was a frustrating exercise and is eager to get back into the dug-out.

With only a one-and-a-half year deal, the manager admitted that time was not on his side and he is looking to make an instant mark.

“I haven’t got two or three years, so I want to try to win every game.

“I expect us to be better at Portsmouth (on Saturday) and a lot better against Southampton (on March 3).”
